    Hi Kristie,

Thank you for your previous prompt reply. I know it is difficult to comment on individual cases but I appreciate your suggestions.

We have had some small successes with getting our 11 month old to sleep on her back and under blankets (after a few months of just using a sleeping bag and being on her tummy) but just wondered if it was common for them to start waking up after their first sleep cycle now that we have started this new method of going to sleep?? During the day I get her up as soon as she wakes but at night she doesnt settle very well after this first cycle, often requiring a lot of settling and ending up going to sleep on her tummy again. Is this common??

    With thanks

    Melissa

    Hi
I’ve just purchased the Safe Bedding Guide, I just wanted to check when it mentions how many blankets to use, I assume that can be any combination of bamboo blanket and/or cellular blanket? Do they provide the same warmth. I’m not quite sure what the difference between the 2 are.
    Cheers

    Hi tizzie,

Big fan of yours. Our daughter has a wonderful routine thanks to you. Only problem she has is sleep.

We live in Townsville and the temp is normally high 20’s to low 30’s even during night with humidity and our bow 18 month old girl is having sleep troubles.
She catches the 7:00 bus in her cot with her mattress protector, cotton fitted sheet and in a short sleeves onesie window open door closed and fan on 3 (high). Weve also tried air con and sleeping bags but she always seems to sleep on her tummy move about the cot during the night and wake around 5:00 and not go back to sleep no matter how long I leave her.
I’m finding it difficult as she doesn’t get appropriate sleep I’m waking early and feeling exhausted
But she throws out her routine as she is awake early therefore can’t sleep at the appropriate time for her age so it throws the routine out.
She wakes at 5:00 I leave her in her room until 7:00 then get her breakfast and give her morning tea by 10. 11:00 comes by and she barely makes it so I put her to bed. Aircon on 27 no fan in a onesie short sleeved. She wakes around 1:30 we have lunch and afternoon tea around 3 dinner 5 bath 6 bed 7. I also have a 10 wk old with no sleep problems but in the mix

    Hi Vicki :

I’m sorry your post was missed previously. Yes, you can use one blanket folded to make layers. So 3 blankets folded in half would be 6 layers.

    Kind regards,
    Kate.

    Hi Aimee :

Thank you for your question. There are quite a few things that could be causing such frequent wake ups for your little one overnight. Cold is definately a very big factor, so it is great that you have been able to start using the bedding guide. Please note that a room cooled to 23 feels like a natural temperature of 21 (as explained in the guide) and as such you need to use the guide for a room fo 21 degrees. Please also keep in mind that the guide is just a guide, and that many parents find their baby needs more layers than listed. You need to use the advice on the guide for assessing your baby, and
add layers 2 at a time until you find the correct amount for your baby (please not the maximum layers recommended for a 16 week old baby in a cot is 15 layers).

Other possible causes of frequent waking over night are being aided to sleep (feeding, rocking, or using a dummy etc), hunger – is baby being fed all feeds until full and have you started solids which Tizzie recommends between 16 & 18 weeks (see the baby book for more details).

    Hi Tizzie,
I purchased your sleeping and bedding article last night and put an extra cotton blanket on. She slept through!!! We live in an area with a climate like Canberra and would like your thoughts on Merino sleeping bags and bodysuits and flannelette sheets. As these are natural fibres and regulate a baby’s body temperature can I use these with the bamboo and cotton blankets? If so Would I reduce the number of blankets/layers you recommend in your sleep article? My daughter has super sensitive skin so try and stick to all natural fibres where possible.

  8. Kate says:

    Hi Michelle :

Thank you for your question. Thats wonderful to hear that your little one slept though last night when you tried some additional bedding! Well done.

Tizzie does not recommend woollen sleeping bags, as when using a woollen sleeping bag you can not add as many layers over the sleep bag before the baby gets too hot. Tizzie does not know if it is the layers that the baby likes because it creates weight rather then the warmth, but she does know that babies like to have layers of blankets when they sleep.

Also, most of the woollen sleeping bags on the market are made of an unsafe stretch fabric. You can read more about Tizzie’s advice on how to select a safe sleeping bag here – http://blog.saveoursleep.com/2010/10/15/what-is-a-safe-sleeping-bag/ .

Tizzie has also found for some babies and toddlers that using woollen bedding has caused baby to sweat and that once removed baby has slept better, so this is another reason woolen bedding and clothing are not recommended.

In regards to flannelette sheets, you may choose to try flannelette sheets if you wish, however in some cases Tizzie has found them to cause babies and toddlers to sweat also. Tizzie recommends using standard cotton or bamboo sheets, so if you found your little one began to sweat using flanelette sheets, or began to experience other sleep issues we would then recommend going back to using standard cotton or bamboo sheets.

    Kind regards,
    Kate.

Hi, I have been looking out Save Our Sleep Bedding information online, have read the Save Our Sleep Book and and also just purchased (and read) the Save Our Sleep Article- Safe Bedding Guide.

In the reply to Aimee above, on 17th Jan, Kate mentions that a room cooled to 23 degrees is like a natural temperature of 21? Unfortunately, I can’t find any information on this anywhere, or if the same thing applies when heating a room (i.e. It would then be a different ‘natural temperature’)? Of you could please direct me to more information on this so I can make sure I am using the guide for the correct temperature, that would very much appreciated. Thank you!

  10. Kate says:

    Hi Joanne :

Thank you for your question. You can find Tizzie talking about cooling the room and explaining that a cooled room feel approximately 2 degrees cooler than a natural temperature on page 12 of the baby book. This only applies when cooling a room. For most states Tizzie recommends heating the room to 20 degrees as read on the room thermometer placed at mattress height near to, but safely out of reach of, the cot. For full details for your specific region please see the bedding guide.

    Kind regards,
    Kate.

  11. Kate says:

    Hi Amanda,

Thank you for your question. The day blankets are the amount you would use for day sleeps, and the night blankets are the amount you would use for night sleep. Essentially at night you have one additional layer on your baby.

The Wrap in a Wrap and the Babyorigami Doublewrap are very similar, the Wrap in a Wrap is just a new version of the Babyorigami wrap that Tizzie has had made herself and we believe to have improvements on the original Doublewrap made by babyorigami. We still sell both because Tizzie’s one keeps running out the door and we are finding it hard to keep up with the demand. http://shop.saveoursleep.com.au/ecms/category.asp?cid=2412

    Hi tizzie
Not sure if you check this forum still.
My lo seems to require man blankets on her to sleep plus the room at 23 degrees even in summer.

We live in melbourne where the days r warm and night cold
I’m not sure really how many layers to out in her aw she wakes up atleast once a night

I’ve read your recommendation in using cellular cotton blankets. I have fleece blankets which are polyester and cotton made..

How many of these would u recommend?!
Or do I just buy cotton ones and out about 8 layers on her?!

  13. Kate says:

    Hi Sam,

Thank you for your post. Tizzie does not recommend using any synthetic blankets or clothing etc. This is explained along with lots of other very detailed information in Tizzie’s Safe Bedding Guide. The guide will give you details on exactly what to dress your baby in for sleeps as well as what bedding to use and how to assess if she needs more or less. It also explains all of Tizzie’s safety recommendations for sleep, which should be helpful for you also. Hi Tizzie,

I live in Cairns and have a question in relation to the bedding guide. How can i apply this up here? It is so humid during summer and aircon is not always available or cost effective to be using every night for months on end. Some nights its 28-32 degrees in my 18month olds room which is hot on its own. But with the humidity its actually hotter and no way of telling exactly. I have no idea hiw to dress her. She wakes at least 3 times a night and has done since birth.

  15. Kate says:

    Hi Lisa,

Here is a link to the latest version of the Safe Bedding Guide – http://www.saveoursleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/save-our-sleep-article-safe-bedding-guide.pdf. You may have missed the tables at the end – this is where you will find the information of different regions and what bedding to use for your climate. You then use the particular table for your region and the room temperature for your room to work out what to dress your child in. If it is 32 degrees in your daughters bedroom you would dress her in just a nappy and a 1 tog safe sleep bag and cover her with a sheet folded in two. Please remember that it is very important to be using only the Bambi/Save Our Sleep approved mattress protector and no other protector. If you do not have the Bambi/Save Our Sleep one then please use just a 100% cotton bath towel instead as explained in the guide.

    Kind regards,
    Kate.

    Hi Tizzie,

I have read your bedding guide, put my 10 month old on your routine and started self settling but she is still a tummy sleeper and won’t sleep through the night.

What is your recommendation for bedding for a tummy sleeper in lower WA? Her room gets the afternoon sun so is really hot at night so I have the aircon on at night and change it to the fan before I got to bed after giving a dream feed. She wakes up at 2:30 but puts herself back to sleep after 40 min. Then she wakes at 5 and is up and down until I get her out of bed at 7. When she is doing this she is not down long enough for me to get blankets back on her, I also have the problem of the room is so much colder at this time too. Is it better to have more blankets on so she is warmer at 5 even though she would be too hot at night? What else can I do to get her to sleep through?

    Thanks
