Hi Tizzie,
I have read your book and I am very keen to put my baby on a routine and follow your advise. I have a preterm baby who arrived at 34 weeks and spent 31 days in the Special Care Nursery where he was feed by tube every 3 hours. I have been expressing every 3 hrs since he was born while we transitioned to breastfeeding. Once we got him home he found it hard to breastfeed and he struggled to get enough milk due to his size. He became dehydrated and the Special Care Midwives suggested topping him up with a bottle of expressed breastmilk unitl he became strong enough. He is now 7 weeks old 2 week corrected age and he can now feed for 25-30mins from one breast and seems full and we don’t need to top up with the bottle anymore. He feeds every 2 to 3hrs and can self settle but it usually takes over an hour for him to go to sleep. I am just wondering if you could help me work out which routine to start him on, how to start him and should I wait until he can feed from both breasts before starting him on a routine? At the moment we are demand feeding. Sometime during the day he will feed every 2 hrs and only gets 40mins sleep between feeds due to winding and then self settling. He also had a dummy in the Special Care Nursury which he does not have now but I always see him looking for it at sleep time. I love all your advise and want to follow it but I am just a little confused as to were to start and how due to our rocky start.
We have an 11 month old beautiful daughter and are blessed to have her. Lately she has gotten into the habit of waking at 2am in the morning and wont go back to sleep unless she is in bed with us. I usually bring her in as we have an early start in the morning and its just easier to let her sleep with us. I want her to get used to sleeping in her own cot and sleeping all night, what can I do to help her do this.
Regards
Jenny
Firstly, I’m really finding your routines are working well so thank you!! My boy is 12 weeks old and formula fed. He was born at 3.7kg and is now 6.7kg so a healthy size. My question is around the feed quantities you would recommend. Currently he needs the 900ml a day. However, I find he has 7am – 100ml(ish), 11am – 180ml, 3pm – 180ml, 6.30pm – 210ml, 10.30pm – 100-140ml so he is coming up 90ml short for the day. He mostly sleeps through the night. The 7am feed I can’t get him to have anything more than 100mlish… Hubby and I aren’t big breaky eaters so maybe he is the same! My question… should I increase the 11am and the 3pm to the 210ml since he drains the bottle? I couldn’t find anything in your book on what to do when they drain the bottle.
Hi Tizzie
What is your advice on changing routines for premature babies? Your book is not specific on this.
My wee man was born 9 weeks early and we have embraced your routines but I’ve struggled to know when to move him. I have been playing things a bit by ear and used a blend of his actual and corrected ages along with any signs that the old routine wasn’t quite working anymore. However I’m a bit unsure if this is the recommended approach and wonder on what you suggest in cases where prem babies are following your routines. My son is now 11.5 months old, or 9 months corrected so in an important stage for determining the next move of routine. He’s currently on the 9 to 12 month routine.
Thanks
Susan
My son is 7 months old and we have been doing your 6.5 – 9month routine for a few weeks now. But I cant keep him awake after the 1:20 nap – 5pm. He falls asleep at about 4:30pm for 30mins or if I keep him awake (which is very hard) he is so grumpy and wont eat dinner and then falls asleep at 6ish during his bottle feed and wakes 30mins later to finish the bottle. Should I let him have his little nap??
Dear Tizzie,
I am a huuuuuge fan of your routines which have been a big success with my first little boy who is now almost 2. I’m due to have another baby soon and am keen to start the new addition on your routines from Day 1! I hope to breastfeed again but the only worry I have is finding time to express at 9:40am with an energetic toddler who needs to be out and about running off steam in the mornings. I’m reluctant to take my breast pump to the park or local playground, hehe!
The other expressing times are manageable – will it throw out the routine totally if I skip the 9:40am expressing? If so, do you or any of your team have any wisdom? I would be so thankful for any tips!
Gemma
Just wanted to thank you for this website. I came here looking for answers for my 6 month old starting to wake 2 hourly every night – and who only ever slept six hours at a time at best. A couple of quick reads gave me enough insight to tweak my routines and change some bad habits such as nursing to sleep and using a bottle to put to sleep at night. I had not realized that I could feed my baby without waking her around 10pm and after reading here I gave it a go. Has been super and is exactly what she needed to get through the night. I have also managed to change a day time cat napping baby into one that has two regular good day time sleeps and is now sleeping about 7.30pm to 6.30-7am. Can’t believe I battled on for six months thinking magically she would sleep through herself. We are in to week three of a solid routine and I have the best baby in the world. Will be buying your book for baby number two (down the track!) to get it right from the beginning.
Thanks again
Happy and rested mum
Michelle
Hi Tizzie,
I have been doing your routine for a 6-8 week old (my daughter is nearly 7 weeks) for 6 days now. She is breastfed and then topped up with formula after every feed. When we first started the self settling she cryed for 45 mins and from then on its has been anywhere from 15mins to an hour for her to settle. Two nights ago she took 1hr and a half to settle at 7pm. During the night so settles after a feed no worries, it just seems to be during the day and going to bed at 7pm. Just wondering if you have any advice for me as to why the settling time is not reducing? She does not have a dummy and I have bought a comforter for her but when I have given it to her she tries to suck it and whinges because she can’t get it in her mouth. So I am not giving that too her yet. When she is trying to settle I can hear her trying to suck her thumb (she can’t co-ordinate it enough yet to get it in-only sometimes). She is in the same bedding during the day and night and i do wrap her, although we dont wrap her arms in because she can get them out and whinges anyway when their wrapped because she wants to try and suck her thumb.
I have also been battling with catnapping during the day which is the reason I started your routine. In the day she usually sleeps 30mins, but now and then I get an hour and once since starting your routine she has had 2 hours. When she has a short sleep I put her in the rocker or pram and she sleeps longer. I guess this will improve when she can self settle?
Firstly thank you for you sensible and easy to follow routine.
A friend of mine bought me your book when I was pregnant and has helped me so much to get my 10 week old into the routine.
I have been on and off the routine due to falling ill and going back to hospital 5 weeks after the birth. But I now have a clean bill of health and am ready and able to stick with it.
I need your help though!
My husband doesn’t get home from work until 7-7:30pm each night, and in the past week of me following your routine he hasn’t seen her, apart from Saturday afternoon and Sunday (his only day off).
Initially I tried to change your routine to put her down at 8 and make up the extra hour with sleeps during the day, but that meant longer gaps between feeds (and we are only just getting to a 4 hr gap now from the 2.5 to 3 hr gap we were previously working on).
Can I just adjust your routine out 1 hour (i.e.: from 8-8) or would you suggest another way to adjust it?
I would really like my husband to see our bub at least for some time each day and I know he is missing her as well. He has not seen her since Sunday night 🙁
I look forward to your reply, and thanks once again for the book and the routine, it has made my life so much more predictable and I like that.
I just need to work this issue out and everything will be wonderful!
I used Tizzies routines for my son and found it to be fantastic! My daughter is now 8 months but still wakes through the night and I am still giving the dream feed. Should I continue this feed at her age? I feel like it may be waking her and disturbing her sleep?
Hi Tizzie,,
I have a six month old son who is a healthy 8.4 kgs and I am looking to start your routines. He follows something similar already regarding sleep times and self settling, however I am having difficulty with his feeding routine. Since about 3 months of age, he has had difficulty taking a full breast feed in one sitting. He will feed on one breast and pull off to burp etc, but then I have great difficulty encouraging him to take the second breast. I then find myself constantly offering him the breast during his awake time. If this is unsuccessful I have to wait until it is almost time for him to sleep to get him to feed. I feel these issue are playing a large part in his night waking. He has been waking at 11pm, 2pm, 5pm or there abouts for about a month now. We began introducing solids about 2 weeks ago, with limited success. He has little interest in eating the food (hated rice cereal, has tried stewed apple, potato, pumpkin, yoghurt and avocado). If we can get him to eat, the most he will ingest at one time is around 1-2 tbsp. He often closes his mouth and will not open it for food. I fear that they two issues are linked together, but I’m not sure how to change it.
I am looking to your routines to help with this issue, making a start today. I fed him at 7am, but he would only take one breast. I then fed him 2tbsp of stewed apple at 8am. He went to bed at 9.20, sleeping 45mins and I was unable to resettle him. I held off on his next feed til 11am, but despite waiting he still only drank one breast. I persisted with feeding him and finally got him to take the other at around 11.45am. I offered him lunch between 12.15-12.45pm, but ate only 2 spoonfuls and refused the rest, even when offered different food (sweet and savoury) as you recommend.
I guess what I’m asking is, should I persist with the routine to the letter if he will not take a full milk feed at that time, or do I let him drink one breast, have his meal and then put him to bed, hoping that after a day or so on the routine he will get used to the four hourly feed and take a full one?
Also, do you have any suggestions regarding getting him more interested in the solids?
Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated. It’s really starting to do my head in.
Thank you so very much,
Nicole.
I have bought your book and safe sleeping guide. However I am finding it difficult (from day 1) to gett second son into your routines. He wakes before the two hrs and is only awake for an hour and a half max. I try to stretch him out but just end up with an overtired baby. Extremely frustrated that there is no advice for this situation. Is it in the book? If so, what page?
Thank you for your post. Without further more detailed information it is very difficult to guide you. If your little one is not sleeping for the full sleep time then you will find details of how to work through the possible causes of catnapping on pages 175-179. You will also find some tips on stretching out baby’s feeds on page 114 which may help you to establish your little on the routines.

Thanks. According to your book his maps aren’t technically catnaps. In addition, neither of the above cited pages discusses how to handle routines when your baby 1.) wakes before the scheduled time (1.5 hrs) and 2.) can only stay awake for 1.5 hrs without becoming overtired… Creating a vicious cycle. It is very frustrating that this is not covered in the book. I have already spent $40 on your book and $9 on the safe sleeping guide. I cannot justify spending another $58 for a forum. Typical.
Thank you for your post. Congratulations on your new baby! It must have been very difficult in those first weeks in the special care nursery, but its wonderful to hear that everything is going very well for you all now. Tizzie recommends starting on the 1-2 week breastfeeding routine until your baby is over 3kg. Once she reaches 3kg you can advance to the next routine. You then follow each routine for 2 weeks until you reach the 10 weeks until starting solids routine, and then the next change from there will be when you start solids (please see the table on page 152 of the baby book for when to start a premature baby on solids).

Hi, my daughter is 11weeks old and I’ve recently started her on your routines. She has been sleeping well and I have to wake her for feeds during the day. The problem im having is she doesn’t always make the two hours of awake time and dozes off after an hour or so, in her bouncer or swing. In your book it says its fine if she dozes off in between sleeps, as long as its not in her bed. This leaves me confused as to how I should go about the rest of the day.
Do I move her to her bed at her next sleep time? Or do I leave her in her bouncer?
What if she doesn’t want to sleep during her sleep time because of her nap?
Thanks in advance.
Kathy
Thank you for your post. Yes it is fine for your little one to doze off and have a little nap in her awake time, but we would suggest not letting her nap for more than around 20 mins. After this point we would recommend waking your little one for some more play before her routine sleep time. However, if you are finding that your little one then has trouble settling for her sleep, does not sleep well for her scheduled sleep, or is waking early from her scheduled sleep, then we would recommend focusing on keeping your little one awake for her entire awake time, so that she is then tired enough to have a good sleep at her routine sleep time.

My almost 7-month old son is generally a good sleeper (self-settles at 7pm and wakes around 7am) and used to sleep-in after his morning feed until around 9am.
I went back to work so started him on the recommended routine, but he seems grumpier now that he isn’t getting a sleep-in. We tried the routine for two weeks and found that he wasn’t having long sleeps during the day and was also not ready for his breakfast at 8am.
The last couple of days I’ve let him sleep in and he seems much happier. The only problem is I’m feeling anxious about feeding times, as they seem to be all over the place now.
Should I go back to the routine, or let him sleep-in? I would appreciate any advice.
Thank you for your post. Without further more detailed information it is very difficult to guide you. At this age Tizzie recommends its important to be waking your baby at 7am and for his other day feeds as per the routine as it is really important to fit in all of his required milk feeds and his 3 solids meals. Letting baby sleep in will cause the feeds to end up quite close together and can then mean they will take less or completely refuse some. There are several things that could be impacting the length of his day sleeps, including the time of his sleep, hunger (for example is he having 3 pureed meals a day, 2 courses fed until full at each meal, and is his lunch and dinner 1/3 protein) and cold. We would suggest using the advice on pages 175-179 of the baby book to work through possible causes for catnapping and short sleeps. In regards to his breakfast, if he is not hungry at 8am, you can try this at 8.20am to see if this helps him to be hungry enough to eat well.
As with anything you need to look at all the advice out there and decide what you feel best suits your baby and your families individual circumstances. If you feel that you would like to establish your little one on Tizzie’s routines, and would like further support from here, I recommend that you join the forum so that I and other mums can help you.

I have a 14 month old son named Tayton and from the time he was born he has been a great sleeper going to bed between 11pm – 1am and sleeping 10 to 12 hours a night… But over the last three or four months since his father got put on 3rd shift I cant get him in bed until 3am – 5am every night. And usually the only way he will go to sleep now is if I take him to my bed and cuddle him to sleep….but once he is sleeping I put him in his crib unfortunately he wakes up every morning about 9am and wont go back to sleep unless he is in bed with me. The fight to get to sleep and sleeping all day has started to wear me and him down. I am unable to get anything done and even when my little tater bug wakes up at 2pm -4pm everyday he is taking several naps like he is not getting a good nights sleep. We live in town so even though we are sleeping during the day town life continues and there are so many interruptions. From the sun shining in, to traffic, or the other members of the house starting there day…. I just don’t understand how his sleeping schedule got so messed up and I do not have the slightest clue how to fix it…. I Need Help and a good nights sleep… what should I do? How can I help myself and my son?
Thank you for your help.
Jennifer
Thank you for your post. Without further more detailed information it is very difficult to guide you. The very first thing we would suggest is that it is very important to look at his bedding, as this will be essential in helping him to sleep well and safely in his own cot. Please look at the bedding guide and make sure he has enough bedding. You can get to it via this link http://news.saveoursleep.com/newsletter.asp?n=E393C841E490485E
Then we would suggest putting him on the routine for his age. This would mean waking him at 7am for the day and sticking strictly to the routine times for the day. Do you have a copy of the Toddler book? This will have all of the information in it that you need to get started.

My boy has been following your routines from 4 months and has pretty much always slept from 7-7. He is now 10 months. But in the past 3 days started waking at 6. I do not go in till around 6.50 hoping he would go back to sleep, but he doesnt. He just lies there and making noises (not crying). And I am sure resettling will not work at that time as he will think its up time if I go in and will just cry and then its too late to fall asleep anyway. Resettling doesnt really work for me anymore as he gets too worked up. I have not changed anything in his routine and he is now exhausted if I put him down at 10am for his morning sleep and simply doesnt last. What do you suggest I do?
Sorry just to add that he is definitely not cold and his diet consists of proteins and he is a very good eater and drinks a required amount of milk as per your books.
Thank you for your question. Yes, Tizzie does recommend that you keep your baby awake until the routine sleep time, to ensure that they are tired enough to sleep a full sleep until their next routine feed time, as sometimes if you put your baby down when they first display some tired signs they may be tired enough to nap, but not to have a good full sleep.
If you feel that you need further support with your little one, and establishing Tizzie’s routine’s then you may like to consider joining the forum so that I and other mums can help you.

I have been following your routines for my 71/2mth old however my baby has never been able to sleep until 7am. As a result I am still following the routine for babies on solids until 61/2month because I can’t keep her awake until 9:20am because she is so tired and ready to sleep at 9. She is not grizzly but you can just see she is desperate to go to sleep. This first nap is usually about 1.5hrs and then her 1pm nap is always only 40mins so most of the time she has a third nap no later than 4:30. She wakes every morning at 5:30-6 and I have been holding out with her first feed until 7am but that has not encouraged her to sleep longer. She still gets up overnight for a nappy change. Is it wrong to make her wait or should I bring your rountine forward by an hour? Any advice would b great. Thanks
I have read your book and my son is thriving on your routines – I have benefitted so much as well, thank you.
I am just wondering about the impact of the “Wonder Weeks” on your routines? If any? I don’t know much about the Wonder Weeks but from what I’ve read it seems things can really go out of wack however I’m wondering if you’ve found whether or not babies on your routines are disrupted by these so called Wonder Weeks?
I was also wondering what some of the signs are that bub is ready to move onto the next routine?
My baby was 6 weeks premature and is currently 9 weeks old (3 weeks corrected).
We are on the 4-6week BF routine at the moment and have been for 2.5weeks and scheduled to move to the 6-8week routine on Monday.
For the last 3 days he has been waking at 6am instead of 7am.
I leave him and stretch him out til 7am for his first feed but I just can’t figure why he is suddenly waking at this time every day when we haven’t changed anything else?
Thank you.
In addition to above – I have been really struggling to keep him awake til 11:45am for his next sleep and he usually pikes it by 11am (as he just did) – could this also suggest that he needs to move to the next routine in the book?
Thank you in advance.
Hi Tizzie, I have done a quick look through previous posts to try and find an answer to my question after reading your book. Someone else us already asked this but in the top video you say you can adapt the routine if you hear your baby cry and its 15 minutes from sleep time you know they must be sleepy so you use your common sense and put them down or 15 minutes until feeding time then feed them. I have been having trouble keeping by baby awake at some stages. The answer to a previous post says to keep them awake as per the routine but this seems to be different to what the routine video says? Thank you Jess
Thank you Tizzie we will start the new routine tomorrow.
I was also wondering whether or not babies on your routines have been affected by the Wonder Weeks in the past? I have been reading up on them and it sounds like everything can really get out of wack, but was wondering if, on your routines, babies are affected as much or if any, by these “Wonder weeks”?
Hi Tizzie,
I was lucky enough to receive your book and have decided to put my 5.5 month old little boy on your routines. He has been capnapping for quite a while now but due to severe eczema and cradle cap, I was feeding him probably more than I should when he woke after his usual 40min day sleeps. Now that his skin has cleared up, we need to sort this catnapping. I have read your advice on catnapping and have been following this for 5 days now but are still getting the 40min sleeps. He wakes up in a real state and takes quite a while to calm down. My question to you is how long do you recommend continuing with this. I am currently putting him down at 9am and 1pm. When he wakes I put him in the pram to encourage more sleep, which he does after a while. He is also taking solids up to twice a day. I have ruled out hunger and coldness.
Many thanks for your time
Lucy
You actually make it appear really easy together
with your presentation however I find this matter
to be really one thing which I believe I’d never understand.
It sort of feels too complex and extremely large for me.
I’m taking a look forward for your next post, I will try
to get the hold of it!
My son is over 6kg and is 11 weeks old. I have followed your routines since he was 2 weeks old. He has just started sleeping through the whole night yay – but I oute him to bed at 7 but he wakes every morning at 5:30 cooing and wide awake (not crying) do you suggest I feed and nappy change him and try to resettle or just leave him to hopefully fall back asleep before 7am? Thank you x Naomi
Thank you for your comment and it is lovely to hear that your son is doing so well. At this age when you baby wakes at any time before 6.40am Tizzie recommends feeding him and treating it as a night feed. You should offer him a full feed and then pop him back to bed until 7am or for 20 mins, whichever is longer. Then you can get him up and start the day by offering him another feed. This will likely be smaller than usual as it will be more like a top up feed. If he wakes after 6.40am Tizzie suggests leaving him in his cot if he is happy, or if you need to get him up then just try and hold off his feed until as close to 7am as possible. If you need to feed him a little early don’t worry, you will get back on track as the day goes on.
One thing we would always suggest to look at when a baby is waking at this time is making sure he is warm enough to sleep well. Tizzie has recently posted a link to her Safe Bedding Guide on her Facebook page for fans to access, so if you can have a look there then this will help you with making sure he is definitely nice and warm. AT this age it is not unusual to be requiring the night feed still at this time, but this is just one of the other things that we look at to give him the best chance of making it through to 7am.

My lo is 7months, since warmer weather started has been waking frequently in the evenings after bedtime…usually after every 40m sleep cycle till the dreamfeed.
I’m thinking he’s too warm in the evenings and may need to be layered up AFTER the dreamfeed.
What do you recommend he sleeps in at bedtime to avoid this evening wakings?!
I have had him in a long sleeve singlet, onesie, 2.5 sleep bag, cotton sheet folded, and maybe a waffle blanket….but on some nights have had to remove the blanket till the dream feed… As then he sleeps without waking earlier.
We live in melbourne with very unpredictable daily /hourly temperatures so it’s getting very hard to know how many layers to start /and end up with!
Many thanks!
To have the room at a set temp requires using a heater….in your experience which style of Hester is the safest and also cost effective per hour to run all night?!
Thank you for your message. I’m sorry to hear that your little one is having some difficulty with settling in the early evening. Do you have a copy of Tizzie’s Safe Bedding Guide? This will explain exactly what Tizzie recommends dressing baby in for each room temp and region. If you do not have a copy then you can down a free copy here – http://www.saveoursleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/save-our-sleep-article-safe-bedding-guide.pdf . Please note it is just a guide and you need to look at the tips on whether your baby might be hot or cold that are listed on the guide information. Most families are using a lot more bedding then the guide suggests so please be aware of this. Also you might find at first your little one responds to more bedding but then gets used to it and you need to add even more layers. Also note the guide needs to be used with the Bambi or Save Our Sleep mattress protector if you do not have one of these use a bath towel or nothing, DO NOT use any other brand of mattress protector or your baby will over heat. It is very common once the weather heats up for babies to need less layers of blankets on them when first going to bed at 7pm, and Tizzie recommend then adding the additional layers that they will need for overnight and morning before you go to bed at night (after the dreamfeed if your baby is still of an age where you are giving this).
In regards to heaters, Tizzie recommends either panel heater or an oil filled column heater are the best options.

Hi, I have a 2 week old baby that I am mix feeding (breast and formula at every feed). I was looking to start your routine perhaps from 3 weeks. Would it be best to start on the bottle feed routine for a 3 week old baby who is mixed feeding?
Thank you,
Jennifer
Ps just bought some more of your blankets and sheets, they are lovely!!!
Congratulations on your new baby and thank you for your lovely feedback about the blankets and sheets, we’re so glad to hear that you are happy with them.
When you are mixed feeding Tizzie recommends to follow the breastfeeding routine as this is very important for your milk supply so you would start your baby on the routine for a breastfeeding baby 2-4 weeks of age.

Do you routines work for babies with silent reflux? I would love to start my 8 week old baby on your routines but have difficulty putting him down to sleep, especially during the day.
Hi Tizzie and team,
My 7 and a half week old son is sleeping from 7-2 then back to bed at 2:45-6. He settled at night with no problem. But he is waking at 6 but I know he is still tired. I try and stretch him out for a feed till 6:30 and when I feed him he falls asleep after 5 minutes. I try and put him back to bed to sleep till 7 but he just cries non stop. It is hard to stick to the routine when he is too tired to stretch out his sleep till 8:30. I have bought your bedding guide and made sure he is warm enough and I haven’t seen any questions like this in the book. Thanks!
Congratulation on your new baby! It sounds like you are both doing very well. At this age Tizzie recommends that you feed your baby as soon as he wakes in the night for any wake before 6.40am. You should offer him a full feed and treat it like a night feed, and then pop him back to bed until 7am (or for 20 mins, whichever is longer). Please try not to let him fall asleep while feeding as this will be aiding him to sleep. Not resettling after a feed at this time does often indicate that baby is not warm enough, and although you are already using Tizzie’s bedding guide, it is worth mentioning for you that most families find that they need several more layers than listed in the tables one the guide, as this is really just a starting point for you. You should use the tips on the guide to assess your baby’s bedding and add additional layers as needed, up to the maximums listed.

Yes Tizzie’s routines do work for babies who suffer from reflux, in fact following her routines and advice can actually help to lessen babies symptoms. You can read more about this on page 58-61 of the latest edition of the baby book.

I have recently read your book and started my then 10 week old baby on your routines. She was a late preterm baby born at 35.2, however was a big baby at 2.7kg and since then has grown well to be just over 6kg now at 11 weeks (6weeks adjusted). I started on the 10 week routine based on advice from your app, however I had issues with her being overtired and becoming very upset requiring assistance to settle and then not being able to make it to the next feed where she was very obviously starving. I found that she was showing tired signs and wanting feeds in line with 4-6 week routine, so started on that routine as per advice in the book. Since starting that routine I have found that she is taking longer to settle (happily awake talking and wanting interaction) and then only sleeping for around 30-40 minutes and taking most of her sleep time to resettle where I have to wake her for her next feed and she gradually becomes tired earlier and earlier for each cycle before falling asleep during and before her 6pm feed. which routine should I start her on, as I am confused that the book says babies 4-12 should start on 4 week routine and app says babies 4-10.
I recently started your routine for my 12 week old who had been catnapping and demand feeding every 2 hours (or whenever unsettled) basically since birth. Since starting your routine I’ve felt immediate relief just knowing when he should be eating & sleeping. He has been waiting out the feeds however we have three main issues i’d love some guidance on.
The first; he can not self settle, I have to rock him to sleep. He also can’t resettle between sleep cycles.
The second; he likes to be nursed or be rocked to sleep. I’munsure how much milk he is getting being EBF. He is 7.3kgs and 13 weeks old. So he’s getting a lot of milk but doesn’t like to do it in one setting
The third; he wakes up every two hours in the night. I can’t help but think formula at night might help as we’ll know he’s getting enough milk for a big sleep.
Oh and he really struggles to stay up for the recommended 2 hours he gets over tired after 1.5 hours.
Would love some help.
Loving the routine just need to have small wins and then Hopefully it will all come together. Thanks Kate x
Thank you for your comments of Tizzie’s Blog, and congratulations on your new baby. You can find all of Tizzie’s advice on how to teach a baby of this age to self settle on pages 198-201 of the latest edition of the baby book (or pages 186-189 of the previous edition). You can find the advice for what to do when he catnaps on pages 187-181 (or pages 175-179 of the previous edition).
If you are always feeding your baby until full at each routine feed time, and offering both breasts then please don’t worry about how much milk he is getting. If he is content at the end of his feed and is refusing to take the breast again then we would trust that he is full. Please only feed your baby at the times on the routine and aim for the feed to be finished within an hour (so the 7am feed done by 8am and so on for his other feeds). Please do not feed him at sleep time as this is a sleep aid and also encourages snack feeding.
Waking often in the night at this age can be a few things, the first we would always look at is his bedding. Waking so often is generally a sign that baby is not warm enough to sleep well or does not have the correct bedding. Here is a link to Tizzie’s safe bedding guide to help you work through the possibility of cold http://www.saveoursleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/save-our-sleep-article-safe-bedding-guide.pdf . Please have a read and follow all of the advice and tips in there and this should really help with all of his settling and sleep.

Thank you for your comments of Tizzie’s Blog. At this age there are a few things we would get you to look at when it comes to early rising. The first is his bedding, as waking at the time is often a major indication that baby is not warm enough to sleep well. Please look at the bedding guide and make sure he has enough bedding, you can download a copy for free via this link http://www.saveoursleep.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/save-our-sleep-article-safe-bedding-guide.pdf.
The next thing we would look at is his routine, so sticking to the sleep times on the 6.5 month routine. If he is going to bed too early this will cause him to wake up early the next day.
There are other things to look at also, like is he having step two formula, if so please go back to step one, and make sure he is having a 1/3 meat chicken or fish in two of his meals a day. He needs to be having smooth puree for all of his meals, and he should be offered a savoury course followed by a sweet course, both courses until full. You can find more details about the causes of early rising on pages 191-198 of the latest edition of the baby book.

I have my 9 month old on your routine aND have done for a very long time..he’s been an awesome sleeper however recently started waking at 4:30-5am ready to tart the day. He hasnt needed a night feed since 3 months so he’s not hungry, hes not too cold, ive just tried changing our bedtime routine so he has awake time after his bottle but no change..the issue is that because he’s awake so early in can’t keep him up until 9.50am when he should be having his morning sleep..I leave him untilike 6.30am but by this time he’s been awake for hours. Jesus ready to go back to sleep by 7.30 which throws out our sleeps for the rest of the day. So my query is while I’m trying to figure out why he’s waking shall I be.keeping him up til 9ish or put him to.bed earlier? It’s a vicious cycle because then it takes him longer to get to sleep coz he’s over tired etc etc. In the you tube video above you say the routine is more of a guide and if the book says put them to bedo at 8.45 but baby’s crying at 8.30 don’t keep them up but there’s such a big difference between 7.30am and 9.50. Sorry it’s such a ramble but I’m at a lose as to what to do!!
Thank you for your comments on Tizzie’s video blog, it’s great to hear that your son was doing well on the routines, but not so great that he has started to have some trouble with early rising. Tizzie has found that the time of the morning sleep will impact the time a baby/toddler wakes the next day, so it is very important that you work really hard to keep him awake until 9.50am. The first day or two may be difficult, but once he starts sleeping until 7am again this will become much easier for him. Tizzie’s advice in the book about putting baby down early if they are tired before their sleep time only really applies if your baby is sleeping well, having full sleeps and sleeping as we would expect for their age overnight. At this age we would expect your little one to be able to sleep until 7am without night feeds, so it is important that we look at the time of his sleep as a likely factor in his early rising.
We would also want to look at other reasons as to why he may have started waking at that time. There are a few things we would get you to look at when it comes to early rising. Hi,
I am just starting these routines but im not sure if i should adjust the routine each time my baby takes an hour to go to sleep….do i wake them up at the scheduled feed time, therfore they only have a short sleep or do i just push all the timings out? (Baby is 4-5 weeks)
Thank you
Congratulations on your new baby 🙂 It is important when following Tizzie’s routines to follow the times as per the routine. You would still wake your baby at the scheduled feed time and follow the routine as normal even if she took a little while to go off to sleep. We would expect your baby’s settling time to improve quite quickly when following Tizzie’s routines and advice so if she is taking an hour to settle to sleep and this does not improve quickly for you then we would want to look at why, as it is usually an indication that something is not quite right and that it is stopping her from settling well. This could be her bedding, or that she needs a routine adjustment, something related to her feeding, or possibly pain/wind or a few other possibilities. Hi Tizzie,
I have read your book and I am very keen to put my baby on a routine and follow your advise.
Thank you so much

We have an 11 month old beautiful daughter and are blessed to have her. Lately she has gotten into the habit of waking at 2am in the morning and wont go back to sleep unless she is in bed with us. I usually bring her in as we have an early start in the morning and its just easier to let her sleep with us. I want her to get used to sleeping in her own cot and sleeping all night, what can I do to help her do this.

Jenny
Hi Tizzie,
Firstly, I’m really finding your routines are working well so thank you!!
Many thanks,
Jodie
Hi Kirstie,
Thanks so much for your speedy reply! Appreciate the advice.
Cheers,
Jodie
Thanks
Susan
Hi Tizze,
My son is 7 months old and we have been doing your 6.5 – 9month routine for a few weeks now.
Thanks Rebecca
Gemma
Fantastic, thanks for your reply Tizzie.

Hi Tizzie,
Just wanted to thank you for this website.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Lauren
Hi Tizzie
Thank you for your help
Leah
Thanks!
Hi Rebecca :
Thank you for your post. Without further more detailed information it is very difficult to guide you. If your little one is not sleeping for the full sleep time then you will find details of how to work through the possible causes of catnapping on pages 175-179. You will also find some tips on stretching out baby’s feeds on page 114 which may help you to establish your little on the routines.
For further help and support I would recommend the online advice area –

Typical.
Hi Yasmeen :
Thank you for your post. Congratulations on your new baby! It must have been very difficult in those first weeks in the special care nursery, but its wonderful to hear that everything is going very well for you all now. Tizzie recommends starting on the 1-2 week breastfeeding routine until your baby is over 3kg. Once she reaches 3kg you can advance to the next routine. You then follow each routine for 2 weeks until you reach the 10 weeks until starting solids routine, and then the next change from there will be when you start solids (please see the table on page 152 of the baby book for when to start a premature baby on solids).
If you feel that you need further support from here I ask that you join the forum so that I and other mums can help you.

Kathy
Hi Kathy :
Thank you for your post. Yes it is fine for your little one to doze off and have a little nap in her awake time, but we would suggest not letting her nap for more than around 20 mins. After this point we would recommend waking your little one for some more play before her routine sleep time. However, if you are finding that your little one then has trouble settling for her sleep, does not sleep well for her scheduled sleep, or is waking early from her scheduled sleep, then we would recommend focusing on keeping your little one awake for her entire awake time, so that she is then tired enough to have a good sleep at her routine sleep time.
If you feel that you need further support from here I ask that you join the forum so that I and other mums can help you.

Save Our Sleep
Hello,
My almost 7-month old son is generally a good sleeper (self-settles at 7pm and wakes around 7am) and used to sleep-in after his morning feed until around 9am.
Thanks so much
Hi Sandra :

Save Our Sleep
Hello Tizzie,
I have a 14 month old son named Tayton and from the time he was born he has been a great sleeper going to bed between 11pm – 1am and sleeping 10 to 12 hours a night… But over the last three or four months since his father got put on 3rd shift I cant get him in bed until 3am – 5am every night.
Jennifer
Hi Jennifer :
If you feel that you need further support from here I ask that you join the forum so that I and other mums can help you.

Hi Tizzy,
My boy has been following your routines from 4 months and has pretty much always slept from 7-7.
Appreciate your urgent response.
Thank you,
Leyla
Hi Courtney :
Thank you for your question. Yes, Tizzie does recommend that you keep your baby awake until the routine sleep time, to ensure that they are tired enough to sleep a full sleep until their next routine feed time, as sometimes if you put your baby down when they first display some tired signs they may be tired enough to nap, but not to have a good full sleep.
If you feel that you need further support with your little one, and establishing Tizzie’s routine’s then you may like to consider joining the forum so that I and other mums can help you.

Save Our Sleep
Hi,
I have been following your routines for my 71/2mth old however my baby has never been able to sleep until 7am. Thanks
Hi Tizzie,
I have read your book and my son is thriving on your routines – I have benefitted so much as well, thank you.
Thank you 🙂
I was also wondering what some of the signs are that bub is ready to move onto the next routine?
Thank you.
Hi, I’m very dissapointed that my question on 20august was not responded to.
Hi Tizzie,
I was lucky enough to receive your book and have decided to put my 5.5 month old little boy on your routines.
Hi Tizzie,
My son is over 6kg and is 11 weeks old.
Hi Naomi,
Thank you for your comment and it is lovely to hear that your son is doing so well.

Hi Erin,
Thank you for your message.

Hi Jennifer,
Congratulations on your new baby and thank you for your lovely feedback about the blankets and sheets, we’re so glad to hear that you are happy with them.
When you are mixed feeding Tizzie recommends to follow the breastfeeding routine as this is very important for your milk supply so you would start your baby on the routine for a breastfeeding baby 2-4 weeks of age.

Hi,
Do you routines work for babies with silent reflux? I would love to start my 8 week old baby on your routines but have difficulty putting him down to sleep, especially during the day.
Thanks,
Jennifer
Thanks!
Hi Lauren,
Congratulation on your new baby!

Hi Jennifer :
I’m so sorry your post was missed, I am not sure why we did not receive notification of it!

Thanks
Jess
Hi Tizzie,
I recently started your routine for my 12 week old who had been catnapping and demand feeding every 2 hours (or whenever unsettled) basically since birth.
Hi Kate,
Thank you for your comments of Tizzie’s Blog, and congratulations on your new baby.

Hi Cassandra,
Thank you for your comments of Tizzie’s Blog.

Hi team,
I have my 9 month old on your routine aND have done for a very long time..he’s been an awesome sleeper however recently started waking at 4:30-5am ready to tart the day.
Thank you know advance!
Michelle
Hi Michelle :
Hi,
I am just starting these routines but im not sure if i should adjust the routine each time my baby takes an hour to go to sleep….do i wake them up at the scheduled feed time, therfore they only have a short sleep or do i just push all the timings out? (Baby is 4-5 weeks)
Thank you
