Hi Kate:
You asked me if I could tell you what my boy’s routine looked like so here it is. It is pretty much the same as the sample routine for a baby and toddler on page 143 of the fully revised and updated Save Our Sleep® book or page 135 of the old book.
I thought I would give you a rundown of last Sunday in the Tizzie household.
7 am I woke Cillian up and fed him, changed him and got him dressed for the day.
(Some days Darragh wakes at 7 if he hears Cillian and I either read to him, watch Brum with him or set him up on his easy PC while I feed Cillian. Today I actually fed them both in bed I got Cillian on the breast and then lay Darragh on the other side and fed him his bottle.)
8 am Darragh woke up and I gave him his morning bottle of milk, Cillian lay under the play centre while I gave Darragh his bottle.
8.45 am Darragh had his breakfast, Cillian was in my arm watching Darragh eat and Cillian and I gave Darragh a hand with the odd spoon full.
9 am Cillian went to bed. I dressed Darragh for the day and got the car packed to go to the beach. At 10 am I got Cillian out of his crib and put him in the car seat and we headed off to the beach 40 minutes away. (not our local one.) Nathan had left at 7.30 to cycle and he met us at the beach at 10.40 am where we transferred Cillian to his buggy.
11 am we were set up at the beach and I fed Cillian in a beach tent. Darragh played at the beach with a friend and we all left and went to a café for 12.30 pm where Darragh had lunch. At 1 pm I wrapped Cillian and put him to bed in his car seat and put Darragh in the buggy. As you will see from the Video they both slept. If Cillian had not transferred in the morning and had woken before 11 am I would have adjusted him afternoon sleep to a bit earlier as explained in the book.
1 pm both asleep and mummy time for me!! I had a coffee and too many chips! Click on the link at the top to watch the video!
3 pm Darragh woke up and had a drink and a snack while I fed Cillian and then we went for a quick walk before we headed home at 4.30 pm (Cillian nap time). We had to take a back road a 4 wheel drive route because the road through Anglesea was so busy.
We got home at 5.15 and I set Darragh up with his dinner and I bathed Cillian in the tummy tub on the kitchen table while Darragh sat beside us and ate.
5.50 pm Darragh had his bath while Cillian had a kick under his play centre again. ( Nathan was off doing the weekly shop)
6.10 pm I fed Cillian and Darragh had some time playing his Easy PC and then Nathan got home at about 6.30 am and gave Darragh his milk.
Both boys went to bed at 7 pm!!!!!!!!!!!

Does Darragh still talk for eons till about 8pm before falling asleep? Or is he pass that stage?
I had to think about that for a minute, he must have stopped doing that a few weeks ago, maybe because we are swimming everyday and he is very tired. he is asleep these nights before i even walk out of his room.

Tizzie if you get the chance, would it be possible to get a rundown of the boys food routine as well, i.e. what they had to eat and how much. Sometimes I am lost for ideas and get a bit stumped as to what to give my little girl instead of the same things over and over… it would also be helpful to know how much especially Darragh is eating as a guide as my little girl is close to him in age! (I know they are all so different but just to get an idea).

Wow, Tizzie…. Darragh sure sleeps ALOT! I remembered I read somewhere once that babies who have been on your routine from early days tend to move up routines quicker. How come Darragh still sleeps 15 hours at 2 years of age?
Makes me wonder if mine at 19.5 months is getting enough?!

Well Cillian’s easy he just has one breast at 7 am and then both breast for all other feeds apart from the 6 pm feed where he has 7 oz/180mls of Bellamies formula, I have started him on some formula to avoid allergies.
Darragh has 2 oz/ 60mls of cows milk at 8.30 when he wakes up.
He has two kids weetbix with milk followed by a yogurt, fruit and toast at 9 am.
10.30 am he has a plate of cheese, fruit and crackers or cruskits.
12.15 pm he has the odd day maybe twice a week when he has a ham and cheese sandwich but most days he has spag bol or fish pie or another pasta dish. (He eats heaps of pasta in fact Nathan worries he eats too much pasta)
3.15 pm a banana or apple cut up
5.30 pm he eats with us 4 nights a week and eats what we eat. So steak if we are out, lasagne last night with carrots, roast chicken or lamb, chops and veg he pretty much eats every thing.
At 6.30 pm he has 2 oz/ 60mls of cows milk

Yes Lynn: Darragh sleeps well! I am very lucky he loves his sleep like his mummy. I have no idea why maybe it is because I keep him really warm and well fed.

I guess every child is different! What is his bedding like on a horrid hot summer day? Say if his room temperature is 28 degrees? Well… assuming that you don’t turn the air con on! Thanks Tizzie 🙂
Thank you so much Tizzie, that really helps… I think I’ve figured out already that my LO is having too much milk?? She probably has at least 150ml in the morning sometimes after her day sleep and around 50mls before bed. She is not a fussy eater in that she’ll eat most things, but would not eat even half of what Darragh does. I.e. For breakfast approx. 45 mins after her milk she would have 1 kids weetbix with 2 strawberries, then maybe a biscuit or fruit for morning tea, half a sandwich or a small cup of pasta/spaghetti type dish for lunch before her sleep, thenshe has milk after her sleep (this is usually her favourite milk feed) fruit or yoghurt or nuts as a mid-afternoon snack and then another cup sized portion of dinner…. I’m thinking maybe I should cut the milk back?? She sleeps well, especially her day sleep (2 hours), although she seems to go through stages where she’s restless at night. She is a very restless sleeper though and moves all around the cot no matter how many blankets I put on her (she is in a bag also).

I too have mummy time at 1pm and wanted to write and thank you 🙂 Without my mummy time I would be a much grumpier parent!! I looked for many answers to a catnapping baby and found your book when my son was 6 weeks old. it saved us and I looked forward to using your routines with my second child.
I now have a three year old and a one year old who are both Tizzie children thanks to the save our sleep book. It is really fabulous and I have recommended it to many friends.

Yes they are all different Lynn. Darragh room can get to 28 degrees some days as we don’t have aircon at that end of the house. He wears recommended clothing. 1.0tog bag and 6-8 layers of blankets. I don’t vary it that much I must admit. Do remember though that Darragh is 2 now and I have found once children get to 18 months they become much better at regulating their own body temp.
Your welcome Kerryn: I am not sure how old your little girl is but you may need to look at cutting out the day milk feed if she is over 12 months and you should then notice her eating improving. It appears she is getting lots of calcium in other forms in her diet. In regards to your mother’s group I am sure if you went and saw the local MCHN clinic they may be able to put you in contact with some people with children the same age who may possible still meet?

I am so jealous that Darragh will sleep for 2hrs in his stroller i can get my DD2 27months to sleep in hers no worries but always wakes up after 40mins i can’t get her to go back to sleep.
Do you wake Darragh after 2hrs of a nap?

Hi Natasha: Yes I wake Darragh at 3 pm if he is not awake but in the buggy he normally wakes up before 3 pm.

I have a question regarding bedding that was touched on in a previous message.
I just bought your “Keeping babies safe at night’ Guide as my LO wakes at 5.30-6.00am every morning.
After reading the guide I changed most things with his cot & bedding.
he was laying on the Plastic side of the matress & turned it over & added more blankets & a sheet to his bedding.
We live in QLD & his room temp is usually 25-28 degrees & I worry about over heating.
He goes to bed in a babygro type outfit with no feet (as I worry he will overheat) & nothing underneath this outfeet. He then has a 1.0 Tog sleeping bag & a sheet with 2 cotton blankets.
The first morning after reading your guide & changing his bedding he woke about 5.30am but fell back to sleep around 6.30 & I got him up at 7am (Dad & I made a big fuss over him 🙂 & the following morning I heard him around 5am & my partner did his dream feed the night before so I knew he woulld not have tucked him in as well as I would have & I got up & tucked him in & he went back to sleep afetr about an hour.
After those two days I did not go back in once I heard him wake early in the morning & he is still waking around 5.30-6.00.
I am really worried about overheating him & just want to check that the bedding is okay.
I am trying to drop the dream feed & wondered if its okay to bring the dreamfeed back as he wakes around the same time in the morning weather he has his dream feed at 9.30pm or 11.00pm? (We have varied it in the past to see if it helped)
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you for commenting on my blog. It is great that you have changed things with your little ones bedding well done. I know it is a worry about over heating your baby but you have to get it really wrong for a baby to over heat. I have here a reference sheet from an SIDS and Kids meeting dated the 6 September 2007 on page 3 in the conclusion box it states there is no evidence to show that extra thermal insulation increases the risk of SIDS in infants who sleep on the back with the head and face uncovered. So if you are following the guides in my guide and using cotton or bamboo bedding and have your little ones face and head uncovered with him on his back you do not need to worry yourself about over heating. It sounds like you are doing well but I would try the exact bedding in the guide as a start and if you still have early rising try adding another blanket or two. Yes it is okay to bring the dreamfeed back.

I am sorry I wasn’t very clear, now that Darragh is older he goes to bed with 6 blankets sometimes 8 and he pushes them off or pulls them up if he is cold. Once your toddler is older they are much better at looking after their own needs. With Cillian I find I follow the guide but use one extra blanket.

At what age did you teach Darragh to do that? I am wondering if my girl has been kicking off her blankets when she got warm. She is 20 months.

I started teaching Darragh at about 14 months how to put his bedding on himself. I did it while he was up by doing role play. We would set up a pretend bed in the living room on the floor with a blanket and I would say mummy is cold and pull the blanket up and then mummy is hot and push it off.

Is it normal for a toddler to start sleeping on her side (curled fetus position) and at the top of the cot (head at the bedhead)? I may have misunderstood and thought she was cold.

I think that sounds like she is cold, I would try more bedding or making the room a bit warmer.

Yes, I thought she was cold too so I did put on 1 more blanket on her but she ended up sort of “moaning” every 2-3 hours and when I checked on her she had kicked her blankets off and her hair was damp. This is a 26 degree day and was sticky/humid.
I’ve actually left her sleeping the way she self-settled (ie, top of cot, sleeping on the side) and she did not wake till I woke her at 7am. I hope that is fine…

Yes it is fine that you left her where she had settled, maybe moving her is taking her away from what she is using to comfort herself to sleep. So from now I would leave her. (to any one else reading this please note this is a toddler not a baby we are talking about)

I am so sorry to hear things are not going well for you. It sounds like you really have tried everything well done. Because she is over two I would suggest telling her it is bed time and what she decides to do in bed is her choice. Tell her you are going to put her in bed and you will be back in at 3 pm to get her up regardless of what fuss she makes. I would give her a couple of safe books for her to read and explain she doesn’t have to sleep she just has to rest and she can look at the books if she wants. Then I would leave her to yell at sleep time but keep an eye on her without her seeing you so she doesn’t come to any harm. At 3 pm even if she has only just gone to sleep I would suggest you get her up.
With not going to sleep until 8 pm I would not worry about this she is still resting and toddlers of this age often talk for a while before they go to sleep. I am sorry this reply is short and to the point but I am very snowed under at the moment. If you are able to afford to join our online advice area you would get lots of help and support in there with this problem and with the new baby, be the way congratulations. Hi tizzee, i hear your the baby whisperer! i’ve read your book over and over and have found the dreamfeed to work!! keep up the good advice. The problem i’m having is in the day with my 10 wk old boy. I know you can’t give me a lot of advice as your time is precious but i can’t get him to self settle he goes red and screams!!! till he falls asleep and is so overtired and then only sleeps 40 mins. i’ve had a gov organisation try help and it’s still not working. I’m really sadened by this… any quick advice? i will try and join save our sleep online but till then any suggestions? his to tired to take his bottle. You can imagine this cycle!!
sorry tizzee but i forgot to mention he has self settled before. Also i have been trying to get him on routine for the last month consistantly. Thankyou also for taking the time to read my blog. I’m only comfortable and trusting with your advice. Thanks Kristina

Thank you for your posts. I am sorry to hear you are having some troubles establishing the routine. The online advice area really is the best way to seek individual advice as we can then look into your indvidual situation with all the information needed and guide you on what you need to do to get the routine working better.
The Four areas we intially look at are – Is your little one hugry, are you feeding him breast or bottle until full? If breastfeeding is there anything that could be effecting your supply?
Is your baby warm enough? we have found addressing a baby’s bedding can solve 70 % of sleep and settling problems.
Are you aiding your baby to sleep? e.g does your baby have a dummy, do you play music in the nursery, do you feed your baby to sleep or rock your baby, if so we would need to look at removing this aid.
Is your baby tired enough? Some babies need more awake time before sleeps than others, this is a final option though and you would only look at more awake time after you are 100% sure your baby is warm enough, not being aided to sleep and not hungry.
As you can see without further information it really is very difficult to guide you but as a starting point I would suggest looking at the bedding guide and making sure your little one is warm enough and also making sure he is not hungry, and not being aided to sleep and then if you join the online advice area we can explore other issues if these things do not solve your settling issues.

thankyou so much tizzee for your reply! my baby is on a bottle and 5 feeds at 160 ml a feed. my baby used to be cold till i downloaded your bedding guide and he never woke again at 4am!!yay god bless you lol. he doesn’t take a dummy after i read your book so thats not an issue. He does like motion to get to sleep most of the time and other times he will go to sleep himself. sometimes he will re-settle after 1sleep cycle but most of the time not. I’ve tried looking at all aspects of your book, but he will not settle. I want to say a huge thankyou for your support and advice, your doing miracles for mums and dads im always saying tizzee says this…lol i just find that joseph gets very emotional for settling and can never stay wake till your scheduled sleep times. If that could work i could have mummytime!! look forward to your reply…Kristina
oh sorry again tizzee but i have been patting him to sleep after he protests for a certain amount of time like in your book under self-settling guide. So maybe after he protests and i go in to help him settle he is using this as an aid???

oh again as i’m thinking about it he goes from being 0-100 in tired signs way before your sleep times. And he is 11 weeks old weighing 6.7kg and is 63cm long. does he fall into a different category for weight? and if he gets patted to sleep how do i remove this? and then he wakes 5 mins later..

Thank you for getting back to me. It is great you have made him warmer and that has helped. I really will need to direct you to the online advice area for further advice as we really need to look specifically into your situation to be able to guide you further. However a couple more final things. You say he drinks 160mls at each feed. If he drains this then you should always make and offer more, if you are already doing this that is good. With the awake time, it is really important to not put your baby down before the scheduled time if catnapping is a problem. Try changing the situation your little one is in, or nappy free time, or even a little bath to help get him through until the sleep time. You mention he likes motion – if you are always rocking him to sleep then this will be an aid. Try to wrap him up, cover him with the correct bedding and leave him to settle himself.

First up I just wanted to say a huge thankyoubecause up until now I was totally lost. I have two older children 10 and 8 and a baby 8mths and no one in our house has had a full nights sleep in the last two months. For the last two days I have been implementing your routines and also getting his bedding right and it seems to be working but my question is in relation to your example routine. As I have the two older children my baby is taken out and about a lot. He will often fall asleep in his car seat or pram and when transfered he wakes up. How am I meant to adjust the routine. I cant find the answer in your book? Thanks so much again. xxoo

Thank you for your thank you it is great news to hear that the routines and my bedding guide is helping you all to sleep better. With going out and about with your baby if it is sleep time just be sure to dress your baby for sleep as in his safe sleeping bag and wrap if you are still wrappiong and have him somewhere safe to sleep. Try and delay his bedtime if you can until you are at home and try and have at least one sleep a day at home if posible. hi Tizzie, we are currently living in Newcastle where it is extremely hot and humid at night. we do not have air con but do have a ceiliing fan. our 3 month old had been a perfect sleeper before we moved here (originally from Melbourne ) I was following your sleep temp guides. however, up here, I’ve tried following the guide for nsw but he seems super hot and sweaty and no matter what we seem to he is restless at night. we only have a porta cot up here which makes him sweat worse so we are putting him in our bed at night as it seems cooler. he’s fine in the day but restless at night. do you have any suggestions? thank you, Sarah
